Sword and knife manufacturers

For high-quality blades, prioritize High-Carbon Steel (e.g., 1060, 1095) for traditional swords or Stainless Steel (e.g., 440C, VG-10) for modern knives. Ensure the Rockwell Hardness (HRC) falls between 54-58 for swords (to balance flexibility and edge retention) and 58-62 for tactical or kitchen knives. Always verify if the blade is Full Tang, meaning the steel extends through the entire handle, which is critical for structural integrity and user safety.

Suppliers should adhere to ISO 9001 for manufacturing consistency. For kitchen cutlery, NSF certification is essential to ensure food safety. If sourcing decorative or historical replicas, ensure they meet blunt-edge regulations if required by the destination country. Furthermore, check for REACH or RoHS compliance regarding the chemicals used in handle materials (like resins or stabilized wood) and blade coatings.

Request a metallurgical analysis report or a third-party hardness test certificate. For aesthetic quality, inspect the grind symmetry and the seamlessness of the bolster-to-handle transition. If purchasing Damascus steel, ask for a chemical etching verification to ensure the pattern is a result of layered steel and not just a laser-etched surface imitation.

For tactical or outdoor knives, prioritize G10, Micarta, or Kray-Ex for their superior grip in wet conditions and resistance to environmental degradation. For culinary or decorative swords, stabilized wood or high-grade synthetics offer a balance of aesthetics and hygiene. Ensure the handle is secured with corrosion-resistant rivets or heavy-duty adhesives.

The most significant risk is Customs Seizure due to varying national laws. You must verify the legality of blade lengths, opening mechanisms (e.g., gravity or spring-assisted), and double-edged designs in the destination country. Always ensure the supplier provides a clear HS Code (typically 8211 or 9307) and accurate descriptions on the Commercial Invoice to avoid classification as 'prohibited weapons'.

Utilize the Secured Trading Service on Made-in-China.com to protect your payments until the goods are verified. Negotiate for a 30% deposit and 70% balance payment after a successful Pre-Shipment Inspection (PSI). Clearly define the Acceptable Quality Level (AQL) in your contract, specifically addressing blade straightness, sharpness levels, and packaging durability.

Require heavy-duty, puncture-resistant inner packaging (such as reinforced PVC sheaths or thick cardboard guards) and moisture-absorbent silica gel packets to prevent rust during sea freight. For bulk orders, use palletized shipments with shrink-wrap to minimize movement. Ensure the outer cartons are marked with 'Handle with Care' and 'Sharp Objects' warnings for logistics safety.

Look for 'Audited Suppliers' on Made-in-China.com who have undergone on-site verification by third-party agencies like SGS or Bureau Veritas. Review their Export Experience to your specific region; a supplier familiar with US Customs or EU import protocols for edged tools will significantly reduce your administrative burden and risk of delays.
