I have found results from400+products and200+suppliers aboutTitanium mountain bike frame
For high-performance mountain bike frames, the industry standard is Grade 9 (Ti-3Al-2.5V). This alloy offers the best balance of strength, fatigue resistance, and weight. For critical high-stress areas like head tubes or dropouts, some premium manufacturers use Grade 5 (Ti-6Al-4V) because of its higher tensile strength. Ensure your supplier specifies the grade for each component of the frame to guarantee long-term durability and ride quality.
You must confirm the Bottom Bracket (BB) type (e.g., BSA threaded, BB30, or T47), the Rear Hub Spacing (standard 142mm or Boost 148mm), and the Head Tube diameter (tapered 1-1/8" to 1-1/2" is standard for modern MTBs). Additionally, verify the maximum tire clearance (e.g., 29x2.4") and brake mount standards (Post Mount or Flat Mount) to ensure the frame integrates seamlessly with modern drivetrain and suspension components.
Titanium is highly reactive to oxygen, so Argon-shielded TIG welding is mandatory. Look for 'double-pass' welds with a uniform 'stack of dimes' appearance. The weld color should be silver or light straw; blue or purple welds indicate contamination and brittleness. Demand compliance with ISO 4210-5 standards, which cover safety requirements and testing methods for mountain bike frames, including fatigue and impact tests.
Titanium frames have a higher upfront cost but offer a superior lifecycle value due to their corrosion resistance and lack of fatigue limit. To optimize costs, negotiate bulk discounts for orders over 20-50 units, which can reduce unit prices by 15-25%. Consider unbranded (open-mold) designs to save on tooling costs, or invest in custom geometry only if your target market supports a premium price point.
The biggest risk is material substitution, where a supplier might use lower-grade titanium or poor-quality tubing. To mitigate this, require a Material Test Report (MTR) for every batch. Another risk is geometric misalignment; even a 1mm deviation in the rear triangle can ruin the frame. Always use third-party inspections (like those offered on Made-in-China.com) to verify alignment and weld quality before final payment.
Request a prototype/sample frame first, even if it costs 2x the bulk price. Use this to test weld penetration and thread precision. During negotiation, clarify that the sample quality must match the mass production quality. Insist on a detailed Specification Agreement that includes tolerances (e.g., +/- 0.5mm) and finish requirements (brushed, sandblasted, or polished).
Titanium frames are lightweight but bulky. Use double-walled corrugated boxes with internal foam bracing to prevent scratches. For transaction security, always use Secured Trading Services on Made-in-China.com to ensure your funds are only released once the shipping documents are verified. For international trade, FOB (Free On Board) is recommended as it allows you to control the freight costs and choose a reliable forwarder.
Check the HS Code (typically 8714.91) for your specific country to determine import duties. Be aware of anti-dumping duties that some regions (like the EU) may apply to bicycles and parts from certain countries. Ensure the supplier provides a Certificate of Origin to help you benefit from any existing Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) that could reduce your tax burden.
